Roger Bobo

(June 8, 1938)

 

 

American tuba virtuoso and brass pedagogue. He retired from active tuba performance in 2001 in order to devote his time to conducting and teaching.

 

He gave what is reputed to be the first solo tuba recital in the history of Carnegie Hall. His solo and ensemble discography is extensive. He is the author of "Mastering the Tuba" published by Editions Bim (CH).

 

While living in the USA, he was the cofounder and conductor of the Topanga Philharmonic Orchestra. He has been a guest conductor with numerous orchestras and chamber ensembles Including the Los Angeles Philharomnic Orchestra, The Trondheim Symphony of Norway, Slovenia Symphony Orchestra, The Slovenian Symphony Orchestrs Brass Ensemble, The Greek Radio Orchestrsa Brass Ensemble and the Hong Kong Brass Ensemble.

 

Roger Bobo currently resides in Oaxaca Mexico and has founded and conducts the Oaxaca Brass Ensemble. He lived 10 years in Tokyo, Japan and has taught at Musashino Academy of Music in Tokyo. Prior to his move to Tokyo he resided in both Firenze Italy and Lausanne, Switzerland and simultaneously served as faculty at the Fiesole School of Music near Florence, Italy, at the Lausanne Conservatory in Switzerland, at the Bern Conservatory, Switzerland, at the Rotterdams Konservatorium in the Netherlands, and at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England. Roger holds a Bachelor’s, and Master’s degree from the Eastman School of Music.

Roger Bobo's latest CD recording is a compilation of three different LP recordings, apparently without any additional editing or re-mixing, that he made in the years 1978-1981. The original recordings included LP numbers S126, S398 and S392, all out of print. The five compositions represented on this new recording are from the Air from Suite No. 3 by Bach played on a B-flat tenor tuba with Zita Carno, piano; Stänchen (Serenade) by Franz Schubert played on an F tuba with Zita Carno on piano; Meyer Kupferman's Saternalis for tuba and amplified cello featuring Daniel Rothmuller on cello; Morton Subotnik's The First Dream of Light for tuba, piano and “ghost” score with Ralph Grierson, piano; and the Encore: Boz by Thomas Stevens for unaccompanied tuba, all presumably played on the CC contrabass tuba.
